Humiliated Student choose to attempt suicide after being ragged in Assam
A ninth standard student of Navodaya Vidyalaya at Rangiya in Kamrup district in Assam has reportedly attempted suicide after being allegedly ragged in the school hostel.
The victim is currently admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here in a serious condition.
The victims mother told reporters here today that her son was being subjected to physical and mental torture by some senior students at the school hostel for a quiet sometime.
The victim had informed his mother about the ragging when he was at home recently and his mother had reported
the matter to the principal.
The mother alleged that the principal refused to accept the complaint, demanding that the boy’s father should register such complain and claimed that there was no ragging in the school hostel.
As the seniors learned that the boy had complained against them, to the school authorities they reportedly threatened to kill him, prompting the victim to flee from the hostel yesterday and attempt suicide.
He was later admitted at the GMCH last night by his family members and is currently undergoing treatment here.
The victim’s mother said she will be taking legal recourse against the school and the principal for failing to act on her complaint and pushing her son to take the such an extreme step.
Meanwhile, the principal of the school told a local television channel in Rangiya that the boy did not want to stay in the hostel but his mother had forced him to stay.
Accepting that the boy had complained of some trouble with seniors, the principal said the seniors had reportedly demanded money from the victim.
He said an internal enquiry is being conducted and the main accused, a student of class XI, is likely to be expelled and four other students who were with the main accused are also being identified and disciplinary actions will be initiated against them also.
The principal denied the charge of misbehaving with the victim’s mother, while tactfully avoiding to confirm whether it was a case of ragging or not.
