IIT-G molestation case: Victims’ ‘local guardian’ sent to jailNergal Scott
One Nilim Dutta, whose name surfaced following the alleged molestation of three Gauhati University girl students and was accused of intimidating Gauhati University (GU) Vice Chancellor Mridul Hazarika, has been arrested by Latasil Police on Tuesday afternoon.
It may be mentioned that Dutta turned out to be the legal guardian for the three GU girls who were allegedly molested by two IIT-Guwahati students during the recently held annual Alcheringa festival.
Latasil Police arrested Dutta from River Heights Garden Apartments in Kharghuli in the city where he stayed as a tenant. City Police Commissioner Hiren Nath had earlier said that Dutta was not cooperating with the police in the investigation in connection with the alleged molestation incident.
Nath said, “Today, the Latasil Police nabbed Nilim Dutta who was wanted by the police. He was hiding in his residence for the last few days. The police produced him before the court which remanded him to judicial custody.”
On the other hand, the Officer-in-charge of Latasil Police Station, Sunil Kalita said, “We have arrested Dutta under Section 34/17 & 41/17. He has allegedly violated the agreement with his landlord, besides he has cheated many in the name of offering jobs. Also, when our team arrived at his residence, he along with his family members stoned at our officials which resulted in injury of two of our personnel. He was hiding in 5th floor, which is the terrace of the apartment by clinging to the window grills. We sought seven-day police custody of Dutta but the court has remanded him to judicial custody.”
It may be mentioned that Dutta was quite vocal on the alleged molestation issue. But was accused by the GU VC of intimidating him over the incident following which the university authorities had lodged a complaint with the police.
